Representation in literature—and especially children’s literature—is more than inclusion; it’s empowerment. Few embody this truth more beautifully than Paty Millán Montesinos, whose bilingual books are helping children with vision impairments see themselves as heroes of their own stories. Her journey—from Latina technologist to award-winning author—is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of authentic storytelling.
Recently recognized by the International Latino Book Awards, Paty’s latest bilingual children’s book, I Love My Magical Eye Patch! (¡Amo mi Parche Mágico!, earned two awards, affirming her growing impact as both a writer and community advocate.
In Paty’s own words:
“As a Latina and a mother, being recognized by the International Latino Book Awards means so much more than an accolade—it represents a growing space for diversity in children’s literature. It shows that my son’s story resonates with others as one of inspiration, resilience, and the beauty of embracing our differences. It reinforces the importance of teaching our little one’s empathy, mindfulness, and inclusion from an early age.”
Paty’s journey from technologist to author embodies the spirit of innovation and purpose that defines our community.
“As a technologist-turned-author, this recognition also validates that our career paths don’t have to follow a single mold. We already wear many hats—let’s silence that imposter syndrome and keep creating, innovating, and sharing our stories. Don’t let self-doubt stop you from solving problems or expressing your voice.”
Her inspiration stems from her son’s journey with Coats’ Disease, a rare eye condition affecting only one in 100,000 people—mostly children. Through her writing, Paty ensures that children living with vision impairments can finally see themselves represented in the stories they read.

“Both of my books help children with vision impairments feel represented in stories—because the characters look like them, wearing an eye patch with pride. I’ve received heartfelt messages and photos from parents showing their children smiling as they hold the books in their hands. For such a rare condition like Coats’ Disease, connecting with other Coats’ Moms has been absolutely priceless. That sense of community and shared joy makes every moment of writing and publishing these books completely worth it.”
Paty Millán Montesinos continues to inspire through her dedication to diversity, inclusion, and authentic representation. Her story reminds us that innovation and compassion can shape not just industries, but hearts.
We invite you to join us in celebrating Paty’s achievement and explore her award-winning bilingual books—El Pirata y Su Parche Mágico and I Love My Magical Eye Patch! —now available on major platforms. Let’s continue to uplift stories that reflect who we are and the future we’re building together.
