Reflecting on Half Moon Bay: A Community in Mourning
Two years ago, a devastating tragedy shook the Half Moon Bay community when a mass shooting claimed the lives of seven farmworkers. This tragedy not only highlighted the struggles faced by these essential workers but also the urgent need for systemic reform to address unsafe living conditions and the ongoing threat of deportation.
Today, as farmworker communities continue to navigate these challenges, we are called to honor the memories of those lost and fight for the dignity, equity, and safety of every family.
The Fight for Farmworker Equity and Housing
Farmworkers, the backbone of our agricultural economy, often live in substandard housing conditions while facing barriers to healthcare, mental health resources, and economic security. With heightened threats of deportation under the new administration, the urgency for community-driven solutions has never been greater.
Thankfully, organizations like Ayudando Latinos A Soñar (ALAS), a Silicon Valley Latino supported organization, are stepping up to lead the charge. ALAS is championing initiatives like the 555 Kelly Project—a landmark affordable housing development for farmworker families—and advocating for mental health equity and immigrant rights.
